    Enhancing experience and support provided to students within the Bologna professionally-focused master’s degree

    The main objective of this study is to analyse Master's students’ views on the competences of (i) the ideal profile of a Master's supervisor, and (ii) the ideal profile of their own, as Master's students. Accordingly, a descriptive and reflective perspective regarding the results is adopted. Additionally, the authors have the objective of presenting a set of recommendations that can help students to deal with the different dimensions and contexts of their student/professional experience: theoretical and pedagogical content, teacher training pre-service tasks, and practice-based research projects. The recommendations go in line with the promotion of support programmes that should not follow a one-size fits all approach, but should instead consider the diversity among students’ profiles as a flagship towards institutional quality enhancement

    Inspiring STEM undergraduates to tackle the AMR crisis

    To address the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), it is necessary to invest in, inspire and attract future generations of scientists to this research area. Undergraduate education should be a focus for attention and efforts should be made to ensure that students are afforded opportunities to actively engage with AMR. We illustrate how as a topic AMR provides opportunities to deliver effective research-led teaching in addition to traditional teaching methods. We have used a selection of case studies to illustrate how students can be engaged with AMR using a variety of research-led approaches to develop the required skills for biology-centric students. In addition, we indicate how these skills map to the UK Quality Assurance Framework and the Vision and Change report developed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science

    Developing Enterprise Skills in Undergraduate Medical Students: A Mixed-methods Evaluation

    INTRODUCTION: Support for the development of enterprise skills in medical education exists from the perspectives of educators, researchers, and healthcare leaders. However, literature is limited evaluating the understanding of medical students about these skills. This study aimed to determine whether medical students valued gaining enterprise skills within the course and those skills that they identified and recognized contributed to enterprise practice in subsequent training. METHODOLOGY: Quantitative and qualitative evaluations were undertaken for over three years. Students completed end-of-course evaluations (n = 895) in 2011 and 2012, responding to closed questions utilizing a Likert scale. Subsequent qualitative reflections were collected by interviews one year later with nine students and eight supervisors. RESULTS: Immediately after course completion, students gave positive feedback, identifying the development of independent learning, creativity, and reflection, as these enterprise skills were most valued. However, in subsequent reflection one year later, they were unable to transfer the acquired knowledge and identify the examples of enterprise around them in their later experiences and had mixed beliefs about its value in medicine. CONCLUSION: Enterprise skills need to be revisited explicitly throughout the medical curriculum, with authentic real-life examples, to sustain students’ understanding about the role of enterprise in medicine

    Preparing sport graduates for employment: satisfying employers expectations

    Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore from an employer’s perspective the skills, attributes, and capabilities required of a sports graduate, whilst also discovering how a student is expected to demonstrate these skills in the context of a sports organisation. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a qualitative interpretive case study approach through the use of face to face interviews with six employers from sports organisations involved in the delivery of sport. Interviews lasted between 30-42 minutes and were recorded. This was followed by a thematic review to allow for common themes to be selected and represented. The results were then reviewed and evaluated by a further 15 industry professionals and sports educators. Findings The results suggest employers seek skills that are characteristically enterprise/ entrepreneurship skills, together with an articulation of a ‘sports graduate’ mind-set. This mind-set is described by the employers as being something which is demonstrated through a combination of behaviours and attributes. The paper concluded that in the classroom the use of case studies and challenges where students have to respond to and solve problems by the very nature of the activity is optimal. Originality/Value The originality of this paper lies in both the context of study and the integration of enterprise and entrepreneurship skills that are needed for the changing world of work in sport. The value of the papers is in both the employer’s description of the graduate mind-set and also examples of how the skills can be applied in the context of sport

    Qualitative undergraduate project supervision in Psychology: current practices and support needs of supervisors across North East England and Scotland

    The dissertation is a core component of a psychology undergraduate degree, though very little research has been conducted into supervision processes at undergraduate level. This study examined the accounts of supervisors of qualitative dissertations in order to identify current practices of supervision and possible resources that might support supervision. Seventeen supervisors from psychology departments in North East England and Scotland were interviewed, and three main themes were identified using thematic analysis: the quantitative culture in psychology teaching, supervisors’ expertise, and the supervision process. Supervisors noted that students were typically constrained in their choice of methodology due to limited qualitative methods teaching, lack of training and guidance for supervisors, and concerns about the risks of demanding qualitative projects. Supervisors therefore often reported staying within their comfort zone, electing where possible to supervise only the methods that they themselves use. Recommendations for practical resources are provided to help support students and supervisors in the process of undertaking qualitative psychology dissertations

    Prescription for nursing informatics in pre-registration nurse education.

    Nurses need to be able to use information and communications technology not only to support their own practice, but also to help their patients make best use of it. This article argues that nurses are not currently adequately prepared to work with information and technology through their pre-registration education. Reflecting the lack of nursing informatics expertise, it is recommended that all pre-registration nursing programmes should have access to a nursing informatics specialist. A prescription to meet the informatics needs of the newly qualified nurse is proposed. This places the areas that need to be included in pre-registration education into broad groups that both articulate the competencies that nurses need to develop, and indicate why they are needed, rather than providing context-free checklists of skills.     An iterative consensus-building approach to revising a genetics/genomics competency framework for nurse education in the UK.

    AIM: To report a review of a genetics education framework using a consensus approach to agree on a contemporary and comprehensive revised framework. BACKGROUND: Advances in genomic health care have been significant since the first genetics education framework for nurses was developed in 2003. These, coupled with developments in policy and international efforts to promote nursing competence in genetics, indicated that review was timely. DESIGN: A structured, iterative, primarily qualitative approach, based on a nominal group technique. METHOD: A meeting convened in 2010 involved stakeholders in UK nursing education, practice and management, including patient representatives (n = 30). A consensus approach was used to solicit participants' views on the individual/family needs identified from real-life stories of people affected by genetic conditions and the nurses' knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to meet those needs. Five groups considered the stories in iterative rounds, reviewing comments from previous groups. Omissions and deficiencies were identified by mapping resulting themes to the original framework. Anonymous voting captured views. Educators at a second meeting developed learning outcomes for the final framework. FINDINGS: Deficiencies in relation to Advocacy, Information management and Ongoing care were identified. All competencies of the original framework were revised, adding an eighth competency to make explicit the need for ongoing care of the individual/family. CONCLUSION: Modifications to the framework reflect individual/family needs and are relevant to the nursing role. The approach promoted engagement in a complex issue and provides a framework to guide nurse education in genetics/genomics; however, nursing leadership is crucial to successful implementation

    The challenge of enterprise/innovation: a case study of a modern university

    In the prevailing economic and political climate for Higher Education a greater emphasis has been placed on diversifying the funding base. The present study was undertaken between 2012 and 2014 and addressed the implementation of an approach to the transformation of one academic school in a medium-sized modern university in Wales to a more engaged enterprise culture. A multimethod investigation included a bi-lingual (English and Welsh) online survey of academic staff and yielded a 71% response rate (n = 45). The findings informed a series of in-depth interviews (n = 24) with a representative sample of those involved in enterprise work (support staff, managers, senior managers), and those who were not. The results provided the platform for the ‘S4E model’ for effective engagement with enterprise: (1) Strategic significance for Enterprise, (2) Support for Enterprise, (3) Synergy for Enterprise, and (4) Success for Enterprise. The outcomes of the research and the recommendations from it have potential to inform practice in other academic schools within the university and, in a wider context, within other Schools of Education regionally, nationally and internationally. Its original empirical exploration of enterprise within education studies is a significant contribution to that body of knowledge
